Eye doctors define cataract as the clouding of the eye's natural lens. It is the most common cause of vision loss in people aged over the age of 40 and is also a leading cause of blindness worldwide. However , to begin with our discussion on mics cataract, it is important to mention that mics cataract surgery was one of the most complicated surgeries at one point of time in human history. It took long, took a long time to heal, and was painful and complicated. However today with techniques such as Micro Incision Cataract Surgery also referred to as MICS, the surgery can be performed with ease.

Now, let's have a look at what is a Micro Incision Cataract Surgery (MICS)

To put it simply, it is a fairly recent development that has happened in the treatment of cataract. It has redefined and revolutionized the entire process of eye surgery. It has also been known to lead to an increased level of comfort for patients along with bringing about near immediate recovery. This new technique of performing cataract surgery has made things easier and simpler, not just for the patients but for the surgeons as well. The technique employed in application of MICS makes cataract surgery safer than ever before, along with being painless, speedy and very accurate. The patient in most cases is able to resume daily activities on the same day or the next day.

Advantages of Micro Incision Cataract Surgery (MICS)

This recent development in the treatment of cataract has many advantages Vis a Vis the older methods that were used before. A few advantages that a MICS offers are-

  • The incisions done are smaller and therefore heal faster which ultimately leads to faster vision recovery
  • Smaller incisions induce lesser change of original shape of the eye. Hence astigmatism caused is lesser and the requirement of post-operative spectacles is reduced to a great extent.
  • The quality of postoperative vision gets improved majorly when compared to other traditional ways of cataract surgery
  • People suffering from a delayed wound healing tendency benefit substantially as there is generally over all faster recovery in this
  • As the wound heals quickly, there are less chances of contracting any sort of infections.
  • A MICS requires minimal restrictions post procedure
  • Since the whole process is speeded up, it implies less follow up visits to the surgeon.
  • The patient can get back to his normal lifestyle like watching TV, computer reading etc. nearly immediately as it’s generally performed on an outpatient basis.

Thus it won't be wrong to say that all these above mentioned advantages contribute immensely to the success of a MICS.

Are there any disadvantages of Micro Incision Cataract Surgery (MICS)?

Just like every other thing, a MICS is also not completely free of disadvantages. A few drawbacks of MICS are-

  • Since MICs are more complicated compared to traditional methods it requires special instruments and additional training, and therefore the cost of cataract surgery by this method is higher when compared to other ways.
  • Eye doctors generally recommend the premium IOLs (Intraocular lens) after a MICS as they are the most compatible with MICS. Hence, if someone chooses not to go with premium lenses, it can compromise on the best possible visual results.
  • Higher power lenses (over +26) insertion is slightly more complicated
  • The eye surgeon needs to be far better trained than in other methods.

We would like to mention that even though there are some drawbacks associated with a MICS, the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

Who needs Microincision Cataract Surgery?

People suffering from cataracts are often suggested to use glasses for improving vision. But, at times the vision does not get better with glasses and people end up struggling with glares. In such cases, an eye doctor recommends undergoing a MICS. It is to be noted here that people experience a much better vision after a successful MICS. Also, all types of cataracts, regardless of grade and severity are amenable to treatment with a mics cataract surgery.
