Prof. Dr Mahipal S Sachdev (Padma Shri Awardee), Chairman and Medical Director, Centre for Sight and President, All India Ophthalmological Society was honoured with Padma Shri award on January 26, 2007. In the year 2017, he attained professorship in ophthalmology.

He is a renowned ophthalmic surgeon who is recognized for his expertise in the area of corneal, refractive & cataract surgery, both nationally and internationally. He is widely credited to be a pioneer in India in propagating the technique of phacoemulsification for cataract surgery and LASIK laser for removal of glasses. Professor Sachdev pursued his medical education at the graduate and postgraduate level from All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He later joined AIIMS as a faculty member. In the year 1989, he took up a fellowship at the Georgetown University, Washington DC to master the latest in ophthalmology.

In 1996, Professor Mahipal Sachdev stepped out of AIIMS with a dream of creating a world-class eye hospital. “Centre for Sight” is an outcome of that. CFS offers state-of-the-art medical facilities to the citizens of India at a fraction of the cost elsewhere in the world, ensuring “patients safety”, “expertise”, and “technology”.
Professor Mahipal is a visionary and leader. He has always been the torchbearer in the field of eye care pioneering several procedures including laser-assisted bladeless

surgery for cataract and LASIK. Prof. Mahipal was among the first to introduce LASIK and phakic IOLs & Femtosecond laser technology for LASIK. Professor Mahipal also has pioneered blade-free femto cataract technology in India.
He has been active in imparting surgical training to the larger ophthalmic community. He has conducted several live surgery demonstrations in the remotest locations of India to teach and popularize the technique of sutureless cataract surgery. In the year 1999, he was inducted to the Summit Autonomous Society USA, which recognizes leading refractive surgeons globally.

He is the Indian representative at the Asia Refractive Council and has been active in various international symposia and conferences, where he has conducted courses and presented over 150 papers. He has authored over 5 books on cataract & refractive surgery, today referred to by every budding ophthalmologist. Professor Mahipal is an active contributor of articles on eye health in mass media for the benefit of the general public also.

Professor Mahipal S. Sachdev has received numerous awards and distinctions in India and abroad for his contribution to ophthalmology. Prof. Mahipal has also received the “Lifetime achievement award- ophthalmology” at Times Healthcare Achievers program held in Delhi. He is a rare combination of a brilliant surgeon, an entrepreneur, and above all, a compassionate human being. He has ensured that the Indian flag remains flying high in the domain of eye care and that the patients in India have access to the best and the latest when it comes to treating their eyes in line with his own mission statement “every eye deserves the best”.
