While the Monsoons bring the much needed relief from all the sweaty heat, they also bring along a host of problems such as allergies, infections and indigestion. Viral infections are known to thrive during rains due to increased moisture in the air resulting in eye pain and discomfort. But there is no need to panic because with good diet and proper hygiene, you will be able to tide through the monsoon with no worries.
Common Eye Infections
Most commonly known infection in this season is Conjunctivitis. The surface of the white of the eye is covered by a thin protective membrane called conjunctiva. Inflammation i.e. redness & swelling, of this membrane is called Conjunctivitis. Stye is another common eye infection that occurs during monsoons.It manifests as a painful lump along the eyelid and is caused due to bacteria. Corneal ulcer is a severe form of eye infection. It results from bacterial or fungal infection. Contact lens users are most susceptible to it. It affects the vision and in worse cases might even result in total loss of vision and require a corneal transplant. Viral infections are prone to occur as epidemics during rainy season when the body immunity may be low and the conditions are favorable for spread of infection. Infection tends to spread by direct contact, fingers, flies and fomites.
Precautions for the Season
Be as Hygienic as Possible Precautions are usually based on hygiene. If you suspect you’ve got or are at a risk of it, wash your eyes gently and use a cold compress. Avoid touching your eyes. Always wash your hands after coming from outside. If someone at home is down with conjunctivitis, wash your hands after administering drops. Don’t share in case of Infection Sharing your towel, handkerchief and similar personal items with others can spread the infection.Infections mostly spread through hands, clothes and other commonly touched items. Wear Glasses Wearing glasses when travelling helps. It protects your eyes from the dust particles and help to prevent infections. Avoid Waterlogged Areas Try to keep yourself away from puddles and saturated areas since such places are highly bacteria infested, which mean chances of you picking up infections are high. Treat with Care Redness, irritation & itching are common monsoon-related eye problems, especially after too much reading, long hours at the computer or watching too much television as these activities further strain the eyes. Doctors treat such problems with lubricating eye drops and advise resting the eyes. Avoid over-the-counter eye drops as they may contain steroids which can be harmful, and seek expert advice.Also avoid using contact lenses during this period. Healthy Diet Eating healthy food is vital to eye health as well, just like the rest of the body.
