Don’t Let Your Eyes Reveal Your Age

Fri Mar 31 2017

The passage of life’s year affects every individual’s health and medical conditions. From greying of hair to weakening of toes and knees, ageing brings to us various inconveniences. Nonetheless, would we want to add any more to this list of sufferings and problems? Surely, not. Thus, in the course of preventing yourself from the shades of ageing, it is important to focus on the health of every organ of your body. Especially, the most vulnerable organs need precise attention. Yes, we are talking about your eyes. We all are aware of eye problems such as Cataract, Glaucoma, Keratoconus, Macular degeneration, etc. Many of these problems are developed with the passing of age. Apart from these, one of the most critical eye problems that can affect you at an older age is the development of eye cancer. Similar to any other body part, eyes are also prone to develop a tumour. And, thus, causes eye cancer. The tumour can be of two types, Benign or Malignant. In the case of a benign tumour, the tumour does not spread outside of the eye whereas, in the case of a malignant tumour, it does. Eye cancer is actually a life threatening problem. The consequences of eye cancer can range from totally losing vision to being a threat to life.  The problem is pretty widespread in the country yet remains unknown to a majority of people. As per studies, India witnesses around 10,000 cases of eye cancer per annum. Suggestively, adults are more prone to the problem in comparison to children or adolescents. Even so, there are varied types of cancers (Benign and Malignant tumour) which possess heterogeneous effects on different age groups.

  • UVEAL METASTASIS: It is secondary cancer which spreads into the Uvea of the eyes from some another affected part of the body.
  • Melanoma: Melanoma or Uveal Melanoma is cancer which develops due to the obstinate growth of a specific type of cell, called Melanocytes.
  • Intraocular Lymphoma: This cancer is not diagnosed handily. It is so because it is developed in the eyeball.
  • Retinoblastoma: It is a rare kind of intraocular cancer figuratively caused to children. As per records, every year, about 1500 children gets affected by retinoblastoma.
  • Hemangioma: It is also a benign tumour. It emerges in the blood vessels and affects the retina and choroid.

Apart from the above-mentioned cancers, there are a few other rare types of cancers as well. Nonetheless, the treatment for these cancers is possible and is effective. In medical terminology, the speciality of treating the problem is called Ocular Oncology. Also, in some cases, the growth of tumour leads to the formation of misshaped eyes. Well, not to worry because there is a treatment for that too. It is called Oculoplasty. Oculoplasty is the science of plastic surgery done around the eyes to reform its shape. Timely detection of the problem and an appropriate mode of treatment can lead to a complete eradication of cancer.  It is highly recommended to visit an eye doctor only for the purpose of both or any treatment related to eye cancer. Because an eye specialist-cancer or plastic surgeon can only understand the delicacy of the eye structure and treats it accordingly.
