What is Ocular Oncology and What does it Treat?

The term ocular oncology refers to a branch of medicine that treats cancers of the eye. These tumors can range from being non-threatening (and easily removable) to life-threatening. In some cases, eye cancers can also lead to the deterioration or total loss of vision, and meeting an ocular oncologist as soon as possible can help prevent the same.

What is an ocular oncologist?

In simple words, an ocular oncologist is a doctor who treats cancers related to the eyes. Such doctors can be surgeons; however, not all ocular oncologists work in a surgical capacity. At Centre for Sight, we work with some top ocular oncologists who can help with a quick diagnosis and effective treatment.

What are the different types of eye cancer?

There are a few different types of eye cancer that fall under the umbrella of ocular oncology. Some of these include:
- Retinoblastoma: This cancer develops in the retina of the eye and is typically found in children.
- Melanoma of the eye: This cancer develops in the cells in the eyes that produce pigments (also known as melanocytes). The cancer is also called ocular melanoma or eye melanoma.
- Optic nerve glioma: This cancer develops on the eye's optic nerve (the nerve that relays visual information to the brain) and can damage vision.

Is ocular cancer curable?

Ocular cancer is generally believed to be curable when caught early. In some cases, if cancer has progressed to most parts of the eye, the ocular oncologist may recommend the removal of the eye itself. In other cases, tumours can be shrunk with the help of chemotherapy and radiation.

What is the survival rate of eye cancer?

The survival rate of eye cancer varies with the type of cancer the patient may have. For instance, melanoma has a 5-year survival rate of 80%, Retinoblastoma has a 5-year survival rate of 96%, and optic nerve glioma has a 5-year survival rate of 90%.
