Wearing specs & lenses all day can be a hassle sometimes, especially on days when you’re running late for work & can’t find your specs or when you forget your umbrella on a rainy day! But thanks to medical science, now you can get rid of the glasses or lens permanently!

Today there are many safe, painless and effective options available. Specs removal surgeries are very common these days to treat Myopia or short-sightedness along with astigmatism, presbyopia and hyperopia (farsightedness). The type of treatment varies depending on your refractive error, visual requirements and the structure of your eye.

Let’s have a look at some of the best specs removal surgeries!

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy):

PRK was the 1st vision correction surgery that used a laser to change the cornea’s shape. In this surgery, you are given anaesthetic eye drops to numb the eye and the epithelial layer of the cornea is removed using a scalpel or alcohol. After this, an excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea.

This surgery became less popular as LASIK procedure came. However, it is a good choice for patients with dry eyes or thin corneas.

ICL (Implantable Contact Lens):

Implantable Contact Lenses are made of a biocompatible material – Collamer. In this process, micro-thin contact lenses are surgically implanted in your eye between the iris and the natural lens to improve your vision. This ICL surgery is suitable for patients with dry eyes, large pupils, irregular corneas, or very high prescriptions and is recommended for patients between the age group of 18-50 years.

RLE (Refractive Lens Exchange):

Like ICL procedure, RLE surgery also uses an artificial lens, which is implanted inside the eye. However, in this surgery, the natural lens of the eye is removed first, and then it is replaced with a monofocal, multifocal or toric lens to correct the refractive error. This treatment is usually suggested when the patient is not fit for laser or lens implant procedure.

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) and IntraLASIK:

LASIK is one of the commonly used eye surgeries to correct refractive error. In this procedure, the doctor lifts a small flap on the top layer of your cornea using a machine operated blade and then reshapes the cornea using a precise laser. However, IntraLASIK is blade-free LASIK eye surgery, and a femtosecond laser is used to create a corneal flap. Both the surgeries result in sharper and clearer vision.

ReLEx SMILE (Refractive Lenticule Extraction, Small Incision Lenticule Extraction):

It is one of the most advanced, painless & minimally invasive surgeries, giving long-lasting and stable results. In ReLEx SMILE Laser Eye Surgery, the doctor uses a femtosecond laser to carve out a tiny lenticule in the cornea, which is then removed, and the cornea is reshaped.
