Nearsightedness: What is it and how can you get it treated?

Did you know that a recent study revealed that by 2030, 31.89% of children aged 5-15 would suffer from nearsightedness? The same study also revealed that this number will be as high as 48.14% by 2050. With this in mind, it's important to understand what nearsightedness is and how it can be treated.

What is nearsightedness?

The term nearsightedness refers to an eye condition in which you cannot see objects that are far away clearly. It is also known as myopia.

What are the symptoms of nearsightedness?

There are a few symptoms of nearsightedness that you can watch out for. These are:

  1. Frequent headaches
  2. Blurry vision
  3. Frequent squinting
  4. Tiredness in the eyes
  5. Eye pain

What are the causes of nearsightedness?

The condition is caused due to a refractive error in the eye that prevents the eye from being able to focus light correctly. Instead of focussing the light right into the eye's retina, the light is focussed in front of it, causing far-away objects to look blurred.

What is the treatment of nearsightedness?

Nearsightedness is a common condition, and various treatments are available for the same. Some of the treatments of nearsightedness include:

1. Corrective lenses:

One of the most common solutions for myopia is using corrective lenses. This can be prescribed in the form of eyeglasses or contact lenses, depending on the patient's comfort levels.

2. Refractive surgery:

If you're looking for a more permanent solution when it comes to correcting your myopia, then you can consider refractive surgery. Here, the refractive error in the eye is fixed with the help of surgery. There are different types of refractive surgeries that your ophthalmologist may recommend. These include LASIK surgery, and SMILE surgery, which are very popularly sought-after treatments.
