Yesterday Glasses, Today LASIK

 LASIK which stands for “laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis” is the most commonly performed laser eye surgery to correct vision and treat the people who are suffering from nearsightedness (myopia), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism.It is done to improve vision and eliminate a person’s need for glasses or contact lenses.  It is done using a laser underneath a corneal flap (in situ) to reshape the cornea (keratomileusis) resulting in a clear vision. LASIK is the most popular elective procedure performed today, largely due to the ease of the surgery itself.  In most cases, laser eye surgery is pain-free and completed within 15 minutes for both eyes. The results can be observed as improved vision without eyeglasses or contact lenses in as little as 24 hours. MYTHS AND FACTS With now some understanding about LASIK, there are various misconceptions that we need to address some of the most common myths. Myth: Anyone who wants to have Laser Vision Correction is a candidate. Fact: Not everyone is a suitable candidate for Laser Vision Correction. Appropriate candidates must be at least 18 years old and have healthy eyes, free of any pre-existing diseases. Appropriate screening is the first and one of the most important steps to ensure safe and effective outcomes#. Myth: LASIK Eye Surgery is painful. Fact: Laser Vision Correction is the most popular elective procedure performed today, largely due to the ease of surgery itself. Eye drops are used to numb the eyes and keep them comfortable during the procedure, which takes only about 15 minutes for both eyes. You will feel some pressure briefly, but laser reshaping of the eye is pain-free. Myth: Post Laser recovery takes a long time. Fact: Most patients notice an immediate improvement in their vision after surgery. The following day, vision is further improved, often dramatically. In most cases, patients can return to work the day after the procedure. Myth: LASIK is a luxury I can’t afford. Fact: LASIK is an investment that can actually save your money. When you factor in what you’re already spending on glasses, contact lenses and solution every year, LASIK is an affordable solution. Myth: Because the outcomes are all the same, the cheapest surgery is no different than the most expensive one. Fact: The old adage, “You get what you pay for,” also applies to laser vision correction. Patients should remember that they only have one set of eyes and it’s probably not a good place to compromise.
