Collagen Crosslinkage with Riboflavin

C3R is a relatively new form of therapy for keratoconus patients. It involves treating the cornea with high concentrations of vitamin B (Riboflavin). This is followed by exposure to UV light. The treatment induces crosslinkage of corneal collagen fibres at molecular level. This treatment is aimed at arresting the further progression of keratoconus by strengthening the corneal architecture. It also aids in better contact lens fitting in these patients and reduces the need for major surgeries like corneal transplantation.

We at Centre for Sight have been pioneers in introducing this treatment and have treated many such patients so far.

Intra corneal Ring Segments (KeraRings)

Semi soft gas permeable lenses are the mainstay of treatment for eyes with keratoconus. This is because such eyes have large cylindrical errors which can not be corrected with glasses. These will be required even after C3R treatment (because C3R only helps to prevent the further progression of keratoconus).

However, in patients who have advanced keratoconus, the considerable cylindrical error does not allow even a contact lens fitting. Also, these lenses can cause irritation and some times infection and redness in eyes.

To reduce these large cylindrical errors, there is a new therapy available. Intacs or KeraRings are specially designed plastic ring segments which when implanted in the cornea, significantly reduce the cylindrical error and improves the vision quality.

Keraring intra-stromal corneal ring segments are precision implantable devices used for the correction of keratoconus and associated refraction errors. Keraring treatment is safe and efficient, thus providing a faster, safer and stable visual rehabilitation, even in more difficult cases.

We, at Centre for Sight have introduced this treatment. Also as further improvement in this therapy, we use state of the art technology (Intralase laser technology) to make the procedure almost painfree and very safe for the patient. It takes less than 15minutes to perform the surgery and the patient can walk back home the very same day.
