Chairman’s Profile, Dr. Mahipal S. Sachdev:
Dr. Mahipal S. Sachdev a veteran of AIIMS, graduated and post-graduated from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, India. He did his fellowship in Cornea and External Eye Diseases from Georgetown University, Washington DC, USA. Dr. Sachdev was formerly an Associate Professor at Dr. R.P. Centre, AIIMS, New Delhi, India and is also a senior Consultant, Ophthalmology at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi, India.
Dr. Sachdev is a pioneer in the field of Phacoemulsification (Stitchless Cataract Surgery) and Vision Correction Refractive Surgery. He specializes into diseases of the Cornea, Refractive surgery and diseases of the lens. Dr. Sachdev is credited with popularizing Phaco at AIIMS and is regarded as the person who gave the crucial initial aggressive push to this technique as he had the vision to appreciate the potential of Phaco several years back itself. Today, Phacoemulsification has become a benchmark for cataract surgery in India.
Customized Vision correction by Refractive Surgery (ZYOPTIX) is another area where Dr. Sachdev has made a mark. He had the vision to appreciate the potential of Lasik and was the first in the country to install the advanced Zyoptix machine - Bausch & Lomb’s “Z-100”. He is recognized by Summit Autonomous Society of U.S.A as a leading refractive surgeon in the LASER vision correction science and inducted into the Summit Autonomous Society (SAS).
Dr. Sachdev has bagged several awards including the Best Teacher Award by Andhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences, Col. Rangachary Medal of All India Ophthalmological Society, Dr. A. C. Agarwal Trophy of Delhi Ophthalmological Society, Best Resident award, Research to Prevent Blindness (U.S.A) International fellowship etc.
He has delivered orations in several national and international venues like, Bombay Ophthalmologists’ Association's conference and Eastern India Zonal Ophthalmological Congress. He has also delivered the Col. B. L. Taneja Guest Lecture of Delhi Medical Association.
Dr. Sachdev’s articles have come in prestigious journals like Archives of Ophthalmology, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology, Cornea, British Medical Journal etc. He authored the first book on Phaco in India- "Phacoemulsification - A Practical Guide".
Dr. Sachdev has been regularly imparting training by conducting live demonstrations on Phacoemulsification and Excimer Laser, the most recent being Instruction Courses at the prestigious American Society of Cataract and Refractive Society (ASCRS) convention in U.S.A.
Dr. Sachdev is President of Delhi Ophthalmological Society and was the Chairman, Scientific Committee of All India Ophthalmological Society. He is also the country representative of Asian Refractive Council (ARC) and is recognized by Summit Autonomous Society of U.S.A as a leading refractive surgeon in the LASER vision correction science and inducted in to the Summit Autonomous Society (SAS).
